Introducing OKW's Sustainability Action Group

As part of our goal to reimagine, reinvent, and reposition our clients’ assets, we view our work with the future in mind. Changing the way we plan, create, and execute our projects to ensure a healthier planet is the most important design challenge of our time. With climate change posing a serious threat to the long-term survival of humanity, we have a shared goal to use our skills, talents, and advocacy to safeguard a prosperous and equitable future to the many communities that we serve.

OUR CALL TO ACTION

As stewards of the built environment, we have considerable influence over how the future is realized. The places where we live, work and play represent the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the US and worldwide. Fortunately, the design and construction industry has made significant strides toward creating high performance buildings of all types and uses. As a result, the industry is positioned to have a profound impact by continuing to foster high building performance and reducing building-related greenhouse gas emissions.

We believe we must alter our process and encourage the entire design and construction industry to join with us to change the course of the planet’s future.

This will require a multi-year effort to change current design and construction practices. Among the goals of this change will be to steer away from the use of non-renewable, fossil fuel energy sources, to promote regeneration of natural resources, and achieve significant reductions in natural resources and waste.

To accomplish these goals, we have established a Sustainability Action Group. Although the entire office will participate in our culture of sustainability and regenerative design, the initiative will be steered by Anders Rustin with targeted help from Bryan Zacharias, Joan Russick, Mary Panter, Meggan Stanton, and Travis Bridges.
